Zmrzlinář: Gluten Free Ice-Cream in Prague 2

If you were looking for a gluten free ice-cream shop in Prague’s Vinohrady district a decade ago, you would have probably ended up at Zmrzlinář. The name of the place means “The Ice Cream Man” or “The Ice Cream Maker”. It is a family-owned gelateria, one of the first of its kind in the area. They have been around since 2008. Owing to its location in a residential district and judging from its name, which is almost unpronounceable for a non-Czech speaker, Zmrzlinář’s customer base is mostly local.

At Zmrzlinář, you can count on fresh, high-quality ice cream without artificial ingredients. 16 flavors are on the menu every day. Half of them are gelatos and the other half are sorbets. Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and pistachio gelato are available daily. The other flavors change frequently. Therefore, we find it fun to just walk in and see what the daily offering is.

All the sorbets are gluten free and lactose free and almost all of the gelatos are gluten free. Check with your server to make sure. You can also ask for a gluten free ice-cream cone. We usually don’t feel comfortable doing that because the cones are not wrapped or marked. You simply have to trust that the server is paying attention when reaching for a cone.

Besides ice cream, Zmrzlinář serves good coffee and tea. In addition, they may have one or two kinds of sweet pastries available. Unfortunately, those are usually not gluten free.

The interior of this Prague ice-cream shop is relatively spacious and fits five or six tables. Unless it is a really busy time, we can usually find a place to sit.

IMPORTANT: Please check Zmrzlinář’s hours on their Facebook page before you head there. They don’t open until 1 p.m. and can be closed Mondays – Wednesdays over the winter.
